Activities at  The Northfield Paradise

Fishing
Long Lake is 4.5 miles long so there is plenty of fishing to be done. The lake is only 29 feet maximum depth and is spring-fed so there are not salmon and trout in the lake.  There is a Long Lake manual in the camp.  Fishing can be done from shore or a kayak or canoe. The fish in the lake are Bass-perhaps the best fishing in the lake and they can be big and numerous. Chubs-considered junk fish that is normally close to shore. Pickerel-also excellent fishing and found close to shore in the grassy areas. They are bony fish. Trout-they say there are no trout in the lake but I have caught it 2-3 years ago. White perch-a very eatable fish that is usually found at deep depths.  Yellow perch-consider a junk fish but fun to catch regardless.  In the general area, there are other lakes, ponds, and streams that offer excellent fishing. The streams offer nice trout fishing and nearby Bog Lake offers salmon. There are a tackle box and two poles at camp for your use. You may want to bring your own though if you are going to get serious about fishing.  We recommend you adopt a catch and release philosophy. If you want to keep a fish please make sure you eat it...Or mount it if you are lucky!

OUTDOOR FUN
Lawn games right outside the camp is a small lawn area that can be used for sunning, relaxing. Outside games are volleyball, badminton, horseshoes, crochet, and a few other games. There are two pull up bars and a rope climb next to the deck for morning stretching. Outside fires there is a single large outside fire pit that can be used for cooking, campfires, toasting marshmallows, etc. This is the only place where an outside fire is allowed. There is plenty of firewood stacked near the fire pit and dry kindling wood in the storage shed. There shall be no outside fires on your departure day. Next to the fireplace are two hammocks for relaxing, both offering commanding views of the lake and camp. Outside Resting/eating there are two hammocks, one large and one medium.  The deck is large and has a variety of chairs and a table. On the grounds, there are two 8-foot picnic tables. Parking there is a large parking lot that will accommodate 8-10 vehicles and also a camper or two. This is a good spot for a game of baseball or throwing the discus which we like to do. There are two at camp. Wildlife aside from the fish once can see beaver, otter, loons, and turtles in the lake. While there are deer and moose in Washington, the population is not great but increasing. We have seen a bear, foxes, rabbits, partridge, and a variety of birds. In the summer of 2009, we had a nesting pair of owls on the point. We saw our first turkeys in 09. The town north of Northfield, Wesley, until recently was considered the bear capital of Maine.
